Geology of the South Island desert lands

As we enter this zone the geology suddenly changes from hard sedimentary mudstone to softer metamorphic schists and slates.

Softer metamorphic material sounds strange and offers a challenge for geology students to head out sample and test.

Early settlers used the local schist extensively for buildings, bridges and roads because of its strata and the ease to shape it.

Here too we can find gold, learn its journey to be concentrated in and near the rivers.
