During the ice ages huge glaciers filled the hollows of today's lakes and valleys. These monsters beautifully sculptured the land, moving billions of tonnes of material. Around 30,000 years ago the huge glacier that made the New Zealand's largest fresh water containment collided directly into a wall of rock lifted turned and plunged on again. This created the very beautiful and very different "Remarkables" mountain.
Studies At some places we can observe the rarely-seen glacial bedrock and see how glaciers carve and shape a valley floor. |
