We view the large Huntly thermal power station where electricity is generated with natural gas and/or local coal.

The demand is greatest in this zone due to its high population, but without significant water supply and high mountains the opportunities for hydro power are limited and are already fully exploited.  Sizable supplies of gas and coal now sustain these projects with the support of South Island Hydro power.
