Home Page Objectives
To understand dry desert lands have been transformed into highly productive
farms and towns..
Situation
These are New Zealand's largest flat lands spreading over 200 km
along the South Island's Pacific coast and reaching over 60km
inland. They now provide food for both local and international
population. Canterbury Plains
We experience the remnants of river deposits dislodged from
the mountains during the highly erosive glaciation periods. As we travel e
see the rivers still carrying out this process.
With human innovation we encounter highly productive
agricultural land that was once inhospitable and dry. Studies explore
the natural processes that displaces the ocean and its development for
agriculture.
Studies
We explore their geology and learn how they were formed and follow
their development Today with human innovation, we find
out how these once desert lands were transformed into high quality
food producing farms. These studies enlighten us into transport,
road building trading systems, animal breeding, farm service
industries, farm service communities, and various farming methods
including irrigation, wind, and river management.
