o
Lewis Pass
At the highest point on this highway there we find a peaceful tarn, surrounded by a wide variety of trees, shrubs, grasses, mosses and lichens.
A short trail from here leads us through a fairy tale alpine garden. Often in winter the ground is covered with snow. Nearby is a deep, narrow forested valley where a vicious battle between two pre European Maori groups took place, the defeated were sometimes eaten - now a delightful walking trail leads us to the area known as "Cannibal Gorge".
