Arthurs Pass Highway

Scree in the Apline Trails.

Two spectacular roads cross over the Southern Alps.  In addition to these, a very popular railway also crosses the Alps with its own magnificent viaducts, bridges and tunnels.

Studies
We explore the planning and engineering of mountain roads and rail systems. We learn of the hazards that close mountain roads and see how nature can destroy them.  KANES show us the remnants and photos of actual events (floods, landslides, earthquakes, frost shatter screes, earthquakes and snow).  We then learn how appropriate planning and engineering will minimise these issues.

Conservation considerations:
I
nterested groups learn how nature can be damaged and sometime badly when people gain easy access to these remote areas.

Mountain Path Finding skills
We examine the interesting art of finding the best route through mountains,  and how to choose and develop access across rivers, slopes, ridges, passes and snow while coping with severe wind, rain, cold, insects and heat

Walking Trails
We learn about walking tracks and the places they can go. We also consider the skills needed for living in the wilderness, where to camp, hazards and the art of map reading.

Alpine Railways:
We explore the dramatic effects on the 1920s society when this service began.  We follow the fortunes of the railway and its effects on the environment and communities in the region.  A train ride is available and we can see some of the viaducts and tunnels.
