In this zone we witness fast flowing rivers that sweep huge quantities of water and eroded, earthquake slips and fault line debris from the nearby Southern Alps.

Because rivers here flood frequently there excellent examples of control systems in place we can view and learn from. Rivers here are known still to destroy mines, farms, communities and roads as the land is steep broken and frequently deluged with rain.

Exploring the rivers in this Zone helps guests understand the ways they impact on settlements shape the land, erode and deposit their bed load. 

Interested groups examine causes, results and management of unwanted alluvial deposition, their role in accumulating of gold and their uses for harbours.

Rivers here carried gold and are still being mined. 

They exposed coal seams and hosted mining towns that are shadows of their original sights
