Ross

Tucked beneath the towering Southern Alps Ross's 1860s population was 30,000 and is now just 300.  It is known as the “Ballarat of the Mining & Milling Zone”.    For 60 years from 1865 many quartz tunnel mines operated until they were flooded in the 1920’s.

Today we view a huge, modern open cast mine (about 1993-2004) and filled with water to form a large lake.

New Zealand’s largest gold nugget was found here.  It was given to the king of England as a gift - the palace melted it down to make cutlery.
