Lake Dunstan
Power began generating from here in the mid 1990s after a massive unexpected land stabilisation program.

This new HEP lake displaced the original 1860s CBD of Cromwell along with 280 people, 17 orchards and 6 farms.  Thirty other businesses were affect.

Major land stabilisation was required to remove the risk of a major landslide sometimes associated with new lakes being formed on the in steep gorges. We can explore how this was achieved.

We see how this new lake dramatically transformed large river valley with its affects on industry, weather and population.

Recreationists enjoy the desert lake mostly for fishing sailing and skiing.

Surrounding it are new vineyards and orchards which use its water for irrigation.

Your guide explains the effects of the lake as it settles and melds in with the dry inland environment.
