The pass links two large water drainage systems and is in among high, picturesque barren tussock lands that are often covered by snow in the winter. The South Islands first gold discovery was made here in 1861 when over 4 lb of gold was taken in just one week. The consequential rush lasted just a few weeks as no more gold was found. The miners moved on leaving the land as nature made it. Golden mountain tussocks shroud the high rolling slopes frequently seen in sparkling snow during the winter months. This trail was found by the ancient Maori people to cross over a high mountain barrier separating large drainage basins of the Clutha and Waitaki Rivers. This has a special visual appeal and is popular with photographers world wide for its colours, shapes and open space. |
