We explore the history and building the mountain passes needed to travel through this zone.  They sometimes catch winter snow storms and become blocked. 

Four different road passes access this inland South Island Zone.  They are all barren and especially spectacular in the low winter lights affording opportunities for photographers. 

At the top of one of these we explore some of the special engineering issues involved with high land road building.
