We follow sections of this sacred river, New Zealands longest (354km), as it slowly winds its way through the rich fertile
farmland, farming service towns and hydro power projects before it eventually arrives at
the ocean discharging a mean
340 cu/sec
The route takes us through towns and cities built at strategic
historic locations where boats
used to transport their goods. Today bridges replaced the ferries
and roads and
railways replaced the old steam barges.
Studies:
We learn about the vicious wars fought around this region, we learn about
sacred areas and see how the river
played its roll in the early transportation systems. We view present
day uses of the river and the processes that formed the flood plains and
gorges we encounter. We can seek out hydro electric power schemes and recreation
activities. We explore the conservation issues and hazards to humans.
