15 Mon Tracy Arm Inlet Canada & Juneau USA
|
Juneau - Capital of Alaska. Pop 31000 - plus about 4 cruise ships (say about 12,000 terists) EVERY DAY No queues, no rush - amazing???? I was be the only one in this 2000+ group to do the pretty costly, but quite good value, glacier hele flight and "air boat" excursion. There were 4 others from another ship. Temp today was around 15degC and about 8 deg at the glacier. The air boat (first one I have ever seen) was definitely less efficient and much more noisy and slower than a jet boat. The driver said it was able to cope with shallower water (and probably last longer in the stony corrosive glacial water). The glacier we saw is about 8 times longer that Franz it moves about a tenth of the speed and the snout is about 8 km wide. The pics show these are not melting as much as ours. Have met only one Australian on this boat but while skimming the city shops today two excited ladies came rushing to me. I naturally thought is was for my charm and good looks - but alas - no they were Australian and were excited to hear a familiar accent when I said "giday". Its fun to be able to yarn and joke without worrying about offending "fellow kin". Still having hassles with the tech stuff. However, it helps really speed up the traffic flows and would even more if old buggars would learn to operate their phones. when I returned to the boat an official took my photo with a lap top and said "welcome back aboard Lloyd. Had a good day?" (Scary). Ship's wifi is only doing emails hence the delay getting the website loaded up. There is wifi in the ports if it is not swamped with millions of terists doing the same.
