Gorges

Because of immense erosion processes  there are many gorges in New Zealand

Involves too are the ways gorges are used for industry and recreation (Rafting*  Jet Boating* Kayaking*, Fishing).

Studies
Also known as "canyons", gorges are found on many rivers. They generally differ from valleys because they are framed by steep sides.

KANES guides provide explanations of the processes, causes and results - depending on the interests of the group and the time available.  We learn how they began and the processes involved with their growth.

Uplifting land from tectonic activity enables gorges to grow.  We explore the effects of the river erosion on different material and the processes involved with the erosion including slips and landslides, water falls, rapids, meanders etc.

Gorges expose history of both geography and once living creatures.

Hydro electric power * and water storage dams commonly use gorges because of the energy they yield for less land consumption.

Recreational and adventure activities use gorges because of their need for fast flowing water, cliffs, exciting rapids, deep pools, high walls and stunning scenery.

Bridges and roads in gorges provide the biggest challenges for their builders and engineers. These offer opportunities for physics and science students.
