Buller River Gorge

The exciting Buller River passes through its deep gorge of picturesque forests, dilapidated mines and remnants of the communities that worked them.

Geography
The gorge follows an active fault line exposing evidence of earthquake activity with scarred hillsides from the slips.  (The last major quakes were 1929 & 1968).

History
Pre historic Maoris used this gorge for transportation into the central areas of the South Island lakes and food. After the first European explorers came fortune hunters with the discovery of gold and coal. During the 1880 towns and roads appeared along its banks and prospered until the resources faded away.
