New Zealand's
most devastating eruption (Mt Tarawera) killed over 150 people and
destroyed a village in 1886.
A metre of hot, heavy ash collapsed roofs
and suffocated the inhabitants. We can view this
"buried village"
with many Maori homes and a tourist hotel.
A guided visit
to the crater of this volcano is available for interested groups.
Museums, books and information
centres provide excellent facilities to help visitors understand the causes and
results of this disaster.
