We examine various ash layers
from bombs to dust and see the extensive ignimbrite deposits. We find
numerous basalt flows, learn about lahars and the delayed dangers and deadly
events thee have caused.
Geology
The entire
zone is made up of volcanic deposits an endless source of fascination for
interested groups. Road cuttings, carry centuries of outpouring history.
Cones
You explore New Zealand's most
regularly active volcano areas and enjoy
excellent walks and information displays that help you follow the
growth of cones.
Calderas
and domes:
We learn about ryolite and see how
this material has made the array of these still active features.
Ignimbrite
tablelands:
You encounter these at
various places and see how they were formed and now shape the land.
Deadly Event:
We explore the
most devastating 1886 event when 2 billion cubic metres
of hot, thick, suffocating ash covered a village killing 150 people.
