Since the early Maori people, live in this remote and inaccessible zone has been difficult and harsh.

Time-warps us back  80 - 150 years when homes, schools, industries and social attitudes were very different.

Here we meet a section of World's "Best Tourist Highway"  and encounter a culture similar to that our European grand parents grew up in.

Industries
We find once promising industries now failed and their settlements deserted to rot in the swamps and regenerating forests.

Farming seeks out the better ground to make the best of the lush growing conditions.

Tourism industries are growing as they make the most of spectacular landscapes, outdoor recreational activities and the colourful history found here.

Gold and coal mining continues on small, modern scales.

People still like to be self-sustaining and independent.

Greenstone (jade) factory
We can extend our small business studies by looking at costs, marketing, leadership, administration and all that is involved with a small, specialised business enterprise. We can learn why jade was treasured and used by the Stone Age Maori people.

Learn a little of the culture of the locals here. Ask the right questions of the staff and they will help you understand the subtle differences between local cultures. Look for the attractions for them by
living in the remote and wild part of New Zealand.
