Great Southern Lakes

Three giant glacier made finger lakes dominate the Adventure & desert Zone: Lakes: Wakatipu, Wanaka and Hawea.

The enormous glaciers began melting with a global warming just 20,000 years ago leaving the huge gouges they now occupy.

Over 600 cubic meters of water flow from these natural reservoirs every second combining into New Zealand's largest river (Clutha)

This steep flowing water generates hydro electric power as well as recreational boating, water skiing, parasailing, swimming fishing and camping for residents and visitors.
