New Zealand Student Tours

Geography Studies

Highly productive soft soils have been collected and uplifted from the ocean floor by tectonic subduction processes.

At the southern end of the this huge Zone we clearly see the faults which cut through the capital city of Wellington.  Both here and in the east of the North Island we can observe and learn about uplifts from recent violent earthquakes.

Tectonics
Tectonics
At the southern end of the Zone we clearly see the active faults cutting through the land and we learn of the history of earthquakes look at their causes and processes and explore how communities prepare to cope with them.

Rivers
Rivers
Rivers found everywhere in the zone.  They are generally slow moving, meandering and sedate. we explore their uses, processes and development with generating power, fertilising land, recreation, town water supply and transportation.

Volcanoes
Volcanoes
Scattered through this large zone we find remnants of hundreds of old volcanoes. We drive to the top of one of Auckland's 50 old volcanoes. This is a 900 yr old volcano cone currently known as Mt Eden.

Karst Land & Caves

Karst Lands & Caves
Just four hours to the south of Auckland we can take a guided tour through New Zealand's most visited limestone caves. These are part of a fascinating limestone area and national parklands that enable us to understand the processes involved with the formation.

Coasts

Coasts
We can search out explore and enjoy beautiful recreational beaches, feature filled rocky shores, mangroves, estuaries, harbours, and many areas of extensive long-shore drifting.

Harbours
Harbours
Interested groups discover the importance of shipping harbours for the trade necessary to sustain large modern populations. We explore different harbours created by different geographic processes.

Erosion
Erosion
Rain and rivers have sliced into the soft land creating narrow steep sided valleys.  They spread the debris onto large flat alluvial plains. Tidal surges have washed the slow river outlets forming deep channels in the mud often creating excellent shipping harbours.

We look at the difficulties caused by the inevitable slips and landslides as they affect transportation, settlements and farming.
