In the 1850's the zone was settled by Scotts fleeing from famine, uncomfortable lifestyles and religious conflicts.  The 1860s produced great wealth from a nearby 40 year long gold rush. Today this wealth is reflected in the opulent buildings and extensive rich memorabilia we find.

Study groups here learn through guided onsite visits and extend knowledge of cultures, communication, physics, and chemistry.  These local industries include: chocolate manufacturing, brewing, tourism, agriculture, shipping and education.
