The zone comprises of rolling fertile farming land with lazy rivers exciting coasts and ancient volcanoes. 
 

 
 

Cold conditions, rich volcanic soils and regular rain falls produce excellent vegetables and great farms for sheep, beef and dairy. Violent seas provide a wide variety of coastal features.

At special places among the remote beaches nearby we can fined the homes of groups of the extraordinary endangered "yellow-eyed" penguins and the more common "little blue" penguins.

Although now extinct, we encounter facts about the giant bird that wandered all over New Zealand up to 500 years ago. This is the largest bird that ever lived on the earth. Its main predator was the world's largest eagle and that also also vanished with the giant moa.

Farm Plains
We can learn about the origins and formation of the southern alluvial plains.  With high fertility and even regular rainfalls these are the most productive sheep and dairy farms in the South Island.

Amid the bays, tidal estuaries and volcanic reefs there are many varieties of marine life here and these can be explored at the universities own aquarium.
